The Monks of St. Vincent Archabbey
Established in 1846, the Archabbey of St Vincent is a community of monks, sharing a life together in Christ Jesus, according to the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church and the monastic Rule of St. Benedict. Out of our common life flows our apostolic works, which are the lasting fruit that our discipleship bears to the glory of God. For this reason, young men are attracted to join us, coming to share our life and thereby sustaining our work, the work of God, from one generation to another.
With more than 160 monks, St. Vincent is the largest monastery in the world, blessed with a healthy mix of monks in all age groups. We serve as seminarians and graduate students, studying around the world; we are school teachers and coaches in our grade schools and military high school, as well as professors in our college, graduate school and seminary; we are also administrators in our schools and parishes, priests and pastors; we are psychologists, spiritual directors, chaplains in the military and for prisons, and hospitals; we are musicians, nurses, accountants, lawyers, property managers and developers, artisans and artists, tailors, cooks and bakers, firemen, farmers and gardeners. We even staff a Catholic radio station, heard throughout much of Pennsylvania, and produce plays each year in our professional Summer Theatre. We are missionaries to Brazil, Taiwan, and China, and evangelists, wherever we find ourselves. First and foremost, however, we are Benedictine monks, integrating our common and personal prayer lives with diverse ministerial roles, serving always as instruments of the local and the universal Church.
